C’è un preciso momento, nell’educazione di ogni uomo, in cui egli giunge alla convinzione che l’invidia è ignoranza; che l’imitazione è suicidio; che deve accettare se stesso per quanto di meglio e di peggio è in lui; che benché il vasto universo sia colmo di bene, nemmeno un chicco di nutriente grano potrà giungere a lui se non attraverso la fatica prodigata su quel pezzo di terra che gli è stato da lavorare. Il potere risiede in lui è qualcosa di nuovo in natura, e nessuno all’infuori di lui sa quello che è capace di fare, né può saperlo finché non avrà provato.

There is a moment, in the education of every man, when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance, that imitation is suicide; must accept himself as the best and worst in him; that though the wide universe is full of good, even a kernel of nourishing corn can come to him but through hard work lavished on that piece of land that was to be processed. The power resides in him is something new in nature, and no one but he knows what he is capable of doing, and can not know until he has tried.
